- : Of course, the Amiga probably wouldn't have enough display RAM to hold
- : even one of the HP screens, let alone multiple ones.
-
- 1280x1024 is 1.25mb. Any base A1200 got 2mb.
-
- : And Juergen, unless you are sitting in front of a very strange HP,
- : it is _not_ using the blitter for virtual screens --- it is using the
- : usual mechanism, which is to get the apps to redraw their windows.
-
- well, all those win managers can handle virtualscreen at multiple
- size of the 1280x1024 screen. I run 3x2 is 6 times more.
- no way for hw scroll (but possible on my A1200 if I use
- clolorless 4 color display).
-
- BTW the X/linux on my friends PC also blits (just checking).
- that info to the "Juergen ever seen linux" people
-
- : You can try that out: Start xv from an xterm (or any other app that
- : opens its own windows and doesn't fork itself into several processes).
- : Then, in the xterm, hit CTRL-Z, which should "stop" the program. It
-
- why so complicated ? just move virtual screen a bit.
- if edges update, it's blitter virtual screen. As unix apps often
- are in the state "locked by something" on our hps :->
- the new parts of the windows are blank and not updated.
- [On kickstart you won't see such "blank & nothing happens" windows.
- ok, on slow cpus you sometimes meet the "zzzz" mousepointer ;) ]
-
- if screensplit, then also blitting. both happened.
-
- some non-ami-fans say screen concept is useless.
- while draging is maybe really comfort you don't need,
- the possibility to run large screens for the shells (all I
- personally need lagre screens for is holding 10 shells :)
- newsreaders / piccviewers can be run on separate screens.
- afaik X even supports different depth screens, my friends
- linux is configured to several 8/16 bit screens).
- so needing less then 8bit/pixel would be even usefull on the
- machines running X.
- (X does know the type "planar". It's the gfx-cards that can't display).
